The president sent General Andrew Jackson to Florida to stop the Seminole Indians from raiding Georgia. The Spanish were told to either police the Seminoles or give control of Florida to the U.S. Spain handed over FL and gave up claims to the Oregon Country in 1819.
The Missouri Compromise
The US evenly divided between slave and free states (11 each)
Missouri wanted to become a slave state. This would upset the balance of power in Congress.
Henry Clay suggested that Missouri be admitted as a slave state and Maine as a free state, therefore maintaining a balanced Congress.
This was known as the Missouri Compromise. It also called for slavery to be banned from the LA territory N of the parallel 36 degrees; Missouri's southern border.

Russian Colonies in the Pacific Northwest- trading posts reached almost to San Francisco.

Once he became president, John Quincy Adams appointed Henry Clay to be Secretary of State.

He was known as the president of the common people.
He believed in rule by the common man and the majority should be listened to.
His nickname was "Old Hickory" because during the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812 he defeated the British even though his troops were greatly outnumbered.
Jackson began replacing many government officials with his supporters. This was known as the "Spoils System."
The Trail of Tears
Indian Removal Act of 1830 - called for Indians to relocate west.
Indian Territory was established - an area in what is now parts of NE, OK, KS
1838 - 16,000 Cherokees were forced to leave their land and walk to Indian Territory
of the 16,000 that traveled, 4,000 died. - This was known as "The Trail of Tears"
